This is a NON-Spoiler review for The Man Who Invented Christmas.
Plot Summary: "Using real-life inspiration and a vivid imagination, author Charles Dickens brings Ebenezer Scrooge, Tiny Tim and other classic characters to life in "A Christmas Carol," forever changing the holiday season into the celebration known today."
The only version of A Christmas Carol that I've seen is the super creepy performance capture 2009 movie with Jim Carrey as Scrooge. I love the story. I have never read a Charles Dickens book but I am a fan of the tale of A Christmas Carol. I am also a guy who's studying screenwriting. And I find it super entertaining to watch someone write. I can't say I find it relatable to watch the character write because I haven't written much. But I do connect with it on some level. I find it fascinating and sometimes really funny to watch writers do what they do. In this movie, you get to watch Charles Dickens do things like writing down names that he finds interesting, getting criticized, struggle to support his family, constantly being interrupted when he finally has a spark. And it's very good drama and it's very entertaining.
If you're a fan of A Christmas Carol, you will love The Man Who Invented Christmas. It's really fun to get a bird's eye view of the story being written. We as an audience know the story. We have the story in our heads. Charles Dickens has the story in his head. I think that we connect with Charles because we both know the story and we watch him get frustrated trying to communicate these iconic things to the people around him. And sometimes it's reversed. For example, there's a scene in the trailer with Charles Dickens trying to find a name for his main character. We know the name is Scrooge. We watch him get frustrated trying to come up with the name while going around his room saying things like "Scratch........Scrunge." It's just really entertaining writing especially if you know the story.
The acting is excellent. Dan Stevens is great as Charles Dickens. He was awesome in Beauty and the Beast, and he's awesome here. If they ever remake The Princess Bride, Dan Stevens needs to be Westley. I thought Christopher Plummer was really good as this version of Ebenezer Scrooge. And Jonathan Pryce who plays Charles Dickens' father was very good as well. He has one really good scene with Dan Stevens.
There was only a couple of flaws in the movie, in my opinion. To me, it was a bit blurry sometimes as to how far Charles was into finding the story. I found myself wondering if he was just in the idea stage or if he was actually writing the story. I just think they could have brought you into what stage the story was in just a little bit more. And I think there were just a few things here and they could have improved about the story here and there, especially towards the end that I won't spoil. But otherwise, I enjoyed this movie a lot.
This is a story about the making of A Christmas Carol. But in a lot of ways, it is A Christmas Carol. It's about the story, but at the same time, it's very similar to the story. Again, I've never written a screenplay. But I have learned that you do write about your own life quite often. And a lot of the time you go through the same journey that the character goes through. It's a lot like the original tale but with a spin on it. And it's a great Christmas story for everyone to enjoy. Honestly, it's one of the best Christmas movies I've seen in a long time. I think I enjoyed this movie a lot more than a lot of people will. Which is why my grade may seem a little high. The Man Who Invented Christmas is one of my favorite movies of the year. But I don't think that it's one the best (if that makes sense). I think I love this movie because I connect with it on a level that a lot of people won't. But it's a great way to tell the original story and it's a great Christmas movie for everyone to see. My grade for The Man Who Invented Christmas is an A-
