Here's my NON-Spoiler review for Suicide Squad. This movie is not nearly as bad as the reviews I've been seeing. But it's also not nearly as good as the trailers. This movie was a lot of fun, but it does have a ton of problems. There are a lot of moments in it that made me think: "What the heck was that!?". The trailer had most of the fun in it. Something you should know: if you see a trailer that has a lot of fun stuff in it, there's two things that could mean. Either there's a ton of fun stuff in the actual movie or you just saw way too much. In this case, the Suicide Squad trailer showed way too much. Most of the jokes were in the trailer. I really hate most trailers. One of the trailers for this movie even made it look like The Joker was the villain. There were a lot of scenes from the trailer that looked incredible, but in the movie were kind of "whatever". For example: The Joker scene "Oh I'm not gonna kill ya' I'm just gonna hurt ya'....really....REALLY.....bad". That scene ends without having any affect.
Speaking of The Joker, lets talk about him. He was the part of this movie I was excited about the most. This isn't the Joker story you're looking for. Joker fans like me, I think, will be a bit let down. He is in no way a part of the Squad. He's pretty much just Harley Quinn's boyfriend. However, Jared Leto's performance was really great. I still prefer Heath Ledger's Joker in The Dark Knight. I'm not saying that Jared Leto is a bad version of Heath Ledger. Jared Leto is a completely different Joker, which I really love, but I still prefer Heath Ledger. Heath Ledger's Joker seemed to know more of what he was doing. If I was in a room with Heath Ledger's Joker it seems like I could actually talk to him. But as for Jarod Leto's Joker, he seems like he's more of a freak that's completely out of it. So Jared Leto as the Joker was great, but, unfortunately, all the character did was be the boyfriend.
Without Harley Quinn this movie had almost no reason for The Joker. Which I really didn't like their romance. The relationship between the Joker and Harley Quinn, I think, is supposed to be really weird and crazy, but they made it way too serious. All of The Joker's scenes weren't really that important. He just has some lines. There weren't any great Joker scenes (like the interrogation scene in The Dark Knight) which is stupid of the filmmakers because the Joker is the best character they had to work with. Why have barely any screen time of the best character? I read that the director David Ayer cut out a lot of Joker scenes, which makes me really mad. (Hopefully we will get to see those in an extended version). I needed some more Joker madness. I love what Jared Leto did, but hated what the filmmakers did with the character.
There's a few new characters that I really like. My favorite new character was Deadshot played by Will Smith. He was really cool. He's really funny, he had a story that I mostly cared about, and he's an awesome sharpshooter type character. He had a really cool mask that he wore maybe twice in the movie, which I didn't like that he didn't wear it more. Probably because they had to have Will Smith's face on screen at almost all times. I also really like the character of Harley Quinn; she was also really funny. And I really liked her scenes with The Joker. Another character that stood out that I didn't expect would is Captain Boomerang. I thought he was also funny and cool.
There were also a few characters I didn't like. Like Killer Croc. Killer Croc felt really weird. And he didn't do much at all. He did have a few funny lines though. There was also a few characters I didn't like that just showed up randomly. There was one character that just showed up and they said "Oh yeah hey this guy he can climb walls. He's in the squad." Then he just disappears. And a Japanese girl with a sword just shows up out of nowhere and joins the squad.
And the worst character of all was Enchantress. She was way too dark. She was supposed to be a part of the Squad but she ended up being a terrible villain. So the dummy's that form the Squad actually create the problem that the Squad has to defeat. And Enchantress had the incredibly cliché plan to take over the world. She spawns these weird soldiers to send after the Squad, which made the plot feel like a video game with just random generic enemies that they have to shoot. I can barely remember what they look like. The big finale at the end looked a lot like the last level of a video game. But the bright side of having a villain that's not interesting is that it makes characters like Deadshot and Harley Quinn stand out in the movie. Because I think the only thing that makes this movie good is watching these people like Deadshot, Harley Quinn, Captain Boomerang, and the little bit we got of The Joker.
Let me get my last few complaints that I remember out of the way. The movie got repetitive sometimes. The editing is a bit rough sometimes. There were some really bad side actors. There was an overload of music. In one scene they will play a song like Bohemian Rhapsody by Queen and they will go into another room and then play Seven Nation Army by The White Stripes. Which was weird and very distracting, even though those are great songs. There were backstory flashbacks at the dumbest and weirdest times. And again, there were a lot of moments that either were actually dumb, or it wasn't clear what was happening which made me think that it was dumb. And a lot of random entire scenes that just made no sense. And finally, I really love the characters that are part of the Suicide Squad but I didn't really buy them as a team. There weren't any scenes with one character helping the other like a lot scenes in The Avengers.
Now that I've gotten that out of the way let me say the positives. This movie has an amazing new perspective of Batman. The way we've always seen Batman in movies is: Batman gets into the Batmobile and leaves the cave and fights criminals. Well in this movie it's from the villains perspective. So Batman just shows up and you get to see how he can be a nightmare for these villains. He showed up in one scene and in the theater I thought "Oh crap! There's Batman." Which I thought was amazing. But unfortunately he wasn't in it more than two flashbacks. I would have liked him to be a part of the plot. Or even have him be the villain of the movie. That would have been great.
This movie starts off moving really quick and doesn't stop. It's a lot better than Batman v Superman and Man of Steel. But this new DC universe is still off to bad start. It set's up future DC movies better than previous DC movies. And it's pretty funny. It's a very re-watchable movie. I definitely recommend giving this movie a shot. It's a lot of fun but it definitely has a lot of problems. Don't go in expecting a good plot. Go in expecting fun characters like Deadshot and Harley Quinn and little bit of The Joker.
