  • This movie was both the best and the worst movie in the Star Trek series. Star Trek and Star Trek: Into Darkness were both directed by J.J. Abrams (one of my favorite filmmakers). And because J.J. Abrams was busy working on Star Wars: The Force Awakens, he couldn’t direct this one. So directing this one is Justin Lin the director of the Fast and Furious movies (which really got me worried).

  • I think it was the perfect time for J.J. Abrams to leave the series because his first two movies were awesome, but they were a lot about developing the crew, which is what they needed to be. At the end of Star Trek: Into Darkness the crew finally set out to go into deep space, which I think was a good time to find a new director to give the series a new direction.

  • That’s what I love about this movie. Star Trek: Beyond had a totally new and fun direction. It’s basically a 2-hour Star Trek episode which is a lot of fun. I think that's what was needed at this point in the series. When the crew finally went into deep space, we needed an episodic adventure. And I heard that in the next Star Trek movie will be going deeper into at least Kirk's story which I think will be good.

  • Also, Simon Pegg (Scottie), who I am a big fan of, co-wrote this movie. I think he did a good job at making this movie feel more like the Star Trek series, and did a good job at making it more funny than the last movies.

  • So as I said, this was a really good time for J.J. Abrams to leave. But i’m not a big fan of the new director, Justin Lin. The new direction Justin Lin gave the movie was great. But he didn’t do an amazing job with a lot of things in it like J.J. Abrams did. I think the biggest thing Justin Lin didn’t do a good job at all was the villain played by Idris Elba. I love Idris Elba (he’s like if Morgan Freeman decided to become Batman). But Justin Lin did a pretty bad job with his character. I didn’t understand what his mission was, which makes it very hard to be against him. And most of the time I couldn’t even understand what he was saying. That isn’t the actor's fault but the director’s fault. And there were details about the villain that I didn’t understand until I thought really hard about after the movie. I think that Khan (Benedict Cumberbatch) was a much better villain than Idris Elba's character.

  • So that’s what I mean by it’s both the best and worst in the series, because J.J. Abrams did a great job at directing, and Justin Lin isn’t a very good director but gave it a new and fun direction. The movie had a fun story, but the way the story is given wasn't very good. Other than that, this movie is great. This movie is a blast, I definitely recommend it.
