This is a NON-Spoiler review for Pacific Rim: Uprising
Plot Summary: "Jake Pentecost, son of Stacker Pentecost, reunites with Mako Mori to lead a new generation of Jaeger pilots, including rival Lambert and 15-year-old hacker Amara, against a new Kaiju threat."
I thought that Pacific Rim: Uprising sucked. Do you need to hear more? Okay. I'm gonna keep this short because I really don't care about this movie which is why this review is a little late. But I was really bored with this movie. I did not think the trailers looked good and I was right to assume that. To me, this movie is a couple steps up from a Transformers movie. I gave the last Transformers movie an F. This is not going to get an F from me. But there are things that I HATE about Transformers that are similar to this movie. But first, let me talk about John Boyega. Come on man! I love John Boyega. I am gigantic Star Wars fan. I loved Finn in Force Awakens. I was bored with his role in the story in Last Jedi. But I was excited to see what movies John Boyega was gonna be apart of in the near future. And both Daisy Ridley and John Boyega have disappointed me with their choices so far. Less so with Daisy Ridley being Murder on the Orient Express. But it really makes me sad that this is the movie that John Boyega chose to be in. If I were an actor, the one actor that I would be admiring for his choices is Ryan Gosling. Every movie that Ryan Gosling chooses to be in lately has been amazing. The Nice Guys, La La Land!, Blade Runner 2049!, Any franchise would absolutely love to have Ryan Gosling leading it. But he chooses his movies carefully. And it makes me sad that John Boyega didn't do something similar and he chose to lead a big stupid blockbuster with robots and monsters and explosions. I love ya' John Boyega, so please pick better movies.
I saw the first Pacific Rim and loved it at the time. It came out when I was 13 and oddly, I didn't watch very many blockbusters. And I saw an IMAX screening of it in like the front row and I was losing my mind. But then I watched it again recently and it's really not that impressive to me. It's a dumb action movie. But it's fun I guess. But this one is just dumb all around. If you liked Power Rangers or any of the Transformers movies, then you'll like this. But I did not......at all. So what does pretty much everybody agree is a problem with the Transformers movies? - They focus too much on the humans. And that's true with this movie as well. I guess I didn't HATE these characters with passion or anything. But I was bored out of mind with them. I guess it was necessary for John Boyega to be Idris Elba's son because...........I don't know. I've seen all of these characters a hundred times in other movies. "I've got a dark past." "The monsters killed my parents." "I keep failing at being a pilot." Blah. Blah. BLAH. And the only character that I really enjoyed from the first movie and some in this movie is Charlie Day. Not that super annoying cartoon scientist friend he has. But I liked Charlie Day. I always find him really entertaining. I hated his role in this story.
I was not a fan of the acting either. I think John Boyega and Charlie Day both did fine with their crappy roles. But everybody else is very rough. Including Scott Eastwood, one of the kids from that TERRIBLE show on Disney Channel Jessie (can't believe I just admitted that I've ever seen an episode of that). They aren't very good. And I blame the director for that. I've used this example before (someone needs to make a term for it. I'd love to hear suggestions) but I'll use it again. George Lucas directed the original Star Wars and the Star Wars prequels. George Lucas is a very passive director. So an actor like Harrison Ford survives through that and makes something iconic. Hayden Christensen fails miserably through that and delivers one of the worst performances in film history. And John Boyega survived through it. Scott Eastwood doesn't really. I'd love to hear his dad describe this movie.
So I was very bored in this movie with the nonsense characters and the rough acting. But also the writing. There are so many completely boring solutions to problems, bad exposition, cheesy Transformers type comedy, and super clumsy character development (sorry to sound like a cliche critic). And there's also a really dumb and obvious recap of the first movie for audiences who haven't seen the original. All they had to do was tell us that monsters used to be here and now they're not. How hard is that to do through dialogue? And my gosh! CGI everywhere!!! EVERYWHERE!...... This completely looks and feels like one of Michael Bay's movies. There are tons of "epic" crooked shots of the actors. And of course...CGI.
So many times I just thought - "Why do I care AT ALL about this scene?". I just don't care about anything. So look...why do people go to this big dumb robot movies? For action. And yeah I guess by the end, there's enough action to satisfy. But everything before I found boring. So when the action started, I just had to turn my brain off and enjoy the punches. So why wouldn't you just wait until this movie comes out and watch the 30-minute clips on YouTube? Because who cares about anything else? I don't remember any of the characters names. Honestly, I don't even remember much about the movie at all. My grade for Pacific Rim: Uprising is a C-. Don't go see this box of garbage. Please go see Ready Player One!
