This a NON-Spoiler review for King Arthur: Legend of the Sword. I'm trying to catch up on movies from this year that I didn't have the chance to review. This is one of 7 movies that I've seen and have not reviewed yet for various reasons. So let's get into it.
Plot Summary: "After the murder of his father, young Arthur's power-hungry uncle Vortigern seizes control of the crown. Robbed of his birthright, he grows up the hard way in the back alleys of the city, not knowing who he truly is. When fate leads him to pull the Excalibur sword from stone, Arthur embraces his true destiny to become a legendary fighter and leader."
I've enjoyed Guy Ritchie's movies. I really don't like his first Sherlock Holmes movie but I love the second one weirdly. I only saw The Man from U.N.C.L.E. once and I don't remember much about it. I think he's a very very weird choice for Aladdin. 26% on Rotten Tomatoes is really harsh. I actually enjoyed this movie. If you want to watch a Lord of the Rings type medieval movie, you should give this one a shot. It's not an amazing or memorable movie, but it is an entertaining movie with sword fighting, wizards, and giant elephants.
Jude Law who plays the evil king villain I thought was pretty good. He has one really good scene that I remember that's towards the end. David Beckham is in one scene..........for some reason.........so stupid. I think my favorite character is Astrid Bergès-Frisbey (you may recognize her from the fourth Pirates movie) who plays The Mage. I haven't heard anyone else say anything about her. I really liked her as the wizard guardian character that she was. I really liked Charlie Hunnam as the lead. I liked the way he was written. He's way better than he was in Pacific Rim. I think that it was dumb to give him the lead to draw box office. He has pretty much every hero's journey that you've heard 100 times. He has a dark past which we get fractures on in flashback and he comes into his destiny. Even though it was cliche, I enjoyed it.
The song that was in the comic con trailer is awesome. I looked it up and it's called The Wild Wild Berry by Sam Lee. I would have loved to see that in a bigger and better movie because it's awesome. I think my biggest flaw with this movie is Guy Ritchie's style. There's a lot of scenes with people sitting around talking about a plan or retracing their steps and they cut back and forth and it's really flashy. It's got super fast editing and the music is fast paced and it's just weird. I think it works for a heist movie or the Sherlock movies. But for a medieval movie, I thought it was really strange. And I think that if every movie he does, he has to have his calling card of this flashy style, I think that's him trying to put a spotlight on himself. Not every movie needs fast-paced fancy shots. It's different for every story. And I don't think it was entirely necessary for this story even though it was entertaining. I think there's a better way to make it fit.
But obviously, the best part of the movie is the action. The opening battle is really really good. All the magic user designs were cool. There were some really good foot chase scenes. The fight scenes with Excalibur were really fun. Some scenes felt very CGI heavy. There’s one fight sequence with Arthur and Excalibur that looks extremely CGI and it looks like a video game. There's some very enjoyable fight scenes but nothing all that memorable. So King Arthur: Legend of the Sword is a very enjoyable medieval movie that is a good movie to watch at home when you're bored. My grade for King Arthur: Legend of the Sword is a B
