This is a NON-Spoiler review for Cars 3.
Plot Summary: "Blindsided by a new generation of blazing-fast cars, the legendary Lighting McQueen finds himself pushed out of the sport that he loves. Hoping to get back in the game, he turns to Cruz Ramirez, an eager young technician who has her own plans for winning. With inspiration from the Fabulous Hudson Hornet and a few unexpected turns, No. 95 prepares to compete on Piston Cup Racing's biggest stage."
I was 6 years old when the first Cars came out. The first Cars was 11 years ago. I really really loved it when it came out. I realize now that the concept is kinda stupid, I still really like the movie though. I think Mater is funny so the second one was entertaining but a really stupid story. I think this one is a harmless cartoon with a story that I think kids might enjoy like I did the first time.
Let me get my compliments and minor complaints out of the way. The animation is Pixar's movies amaze me every time. The racing scenes get actually kinda riveting at times. It feels like you're watching real cars race in some scenes, and that's a praise to the animation team and the sound designers. I'm always a huge fan of Randy Newman's scores. This new score however felt too much like Toy Story instead of Cars. It also used pieces of the original Cars score in the weirdest places. Michael Keaton had a role in the first Cars, and they re-casted him in this movie. I didn't think it was necessary at all to have that character and it really bothered me that it sounded nothing like him. I always love Pixar's short films and I loved this short film that's called "Lou" directed by Dave Mullins.
I really enjoyed the story of this movie. Lightning's journey was kinda intriguing. I was really invested in Lightning and the racing when I was young in the theater. And I think if I had seen this when I was 6 I would have been invested even more in Cars 3. You really feel the connection between Rocky and Mick........I mean Lightning and Doc. Because Lightning is going through the same stuff that Doc goes through in the stories Lightning hears in the first movie. I think kids might be really invested in Lightning's journey. However, I think the movie ends with a good choice story-wise but at the same time a little unsatisfying. I was on board with it by the end because it felt real and was very cool emotionally.
I think the biggest problem this movie has, is that I didn't find it to be all that entertaining. Again, I really really like Mater. And he's in like 3 scenes of this movie. I think that having him be there more would have made it more fun. I think the lack of good humor is a huge problem. I rarely laughed during the entire movie. I think that's the biggest problem this movie has. If they would have been able to make this movie have a good story like it did and also have the humor, I think you would have had a really good movie for kids and adults.
So overall I don't think Cars 3 will be one of my favorite movies of the year or go down in history as one of the worst Pixar movies ever. But I think it's a harmless cartoon. So I wouldn't recommend this for adults. And if you're kids liked the racing from the first Cars then I think they'll love this one. There is a post-credits scene if you decide to go. I think if you want a good kids comedy, I'd wait for Despicable Me 3 in a couple weeks. Pixar is definitely one of my top 3 favorite movie studios and I just wish they would put out better stuff right now. My grade for Cars 3 is a B-
