This is a SPOILER HEAVY review for the biggest movie ever created by humanity (maybe combined) that is........until the next one, Avengers: Infinity War.
Plot Summary: "It's time for the Avengers to battle their most powerful enemy yet -- the evil Thanos. On a mission to collect all six Infinity Stones, Thanos plans to use the artifacts to inflict his twisted will on reality. The fate of the planet and existence itself has never been more uncertain as everything the Avengers have fought for has led up to this moment."
Last warning. This is a SPOILER HEAVY review. All of the SPOILERS are ahead. For the three people out there who haven't seen it, then you're even later than this review. And that's shameful. Final warning - SPOILERS. Alright. Let's get into it.
My head is gonna explode. This movie is massive. And it's fantastic. I think it's easily the best MCU movie. Thinking about being the director of this movie makes me want to cry and vomit at the same time. This has to be an all-time record for the number of movie stars. The balancing act with this movie is insane. There were so many times in the theater I just thought "This is one of the nerdiest things I've ever witnessed." The moment that made think "I can't believe this is happening" is when Cap and Groot meet. It's still crazy to think about Iron Man, Doctor Strange, The Guardians, And Spider-Man all interacting. I can't believe I watched that. I actually witnessed that. So this movie is stacked with heroes and so much freaking fun. But let's talk about one of the best villains in cinema history....Thanos. Do you know how you introduce a villain? Show him beating the freaking Hulk until he's nearly dead.
I remember hearing that Kevin Feige was saying that Thanos was essentially going to be the main character of this movie, and I think what he meant by that was this was Thanos' journey. Thanos is the one that has the most growth in the movie. I loved that this movie essentially gave Thanos the classic hero's journey. At times I felt invested in Thanos' goal. I actually felt a sense of completion when he got the final stone. But at the same time, it's terrifying. I also thought it was so cool the way he uses the stones to manipulate the place he's in. He threw a FREAKING MOON at them! I think they absolutely delivered on this part of the battle against Thanos. Because this was his journey into full power, and I know the next movie is going to be all out chaos trying to get everyone back. I'll talk about how this movie ends and the future later. You guys should check a YouTube channel called "Just Write" and watch his video on Infinity War. He had some awesome points that I agree with and his channel is awesome.
Let me talk about my few complaints. This one is a small complaint. I think the Black Order could have been stronger. They're essentially a team of villains that are about the same level as every MCU villain. And that's not necessarily a bad thing because I love the focus being on the rise of Thanos. But I do think they could have been stronger and even written better. My next complaint is also a small one, Captain America is at times, my favorite Avenger. And I wanted more screen time for him. I got chills when he came out of the shadows and I LOVED watching him fight in the battle at Wakanda. But I really wanted him to have a bigger role. But I expect a MUCH bigger role for him in the next movie (more on that later). I also thought that Peter Dinklage's character was incredibly weird and out of left field. When he first came on screen I thought "Is that Sweetums from the Muppets?" That character took some getting used to. I also really wanted to see Ant-Man and Green Hulk. Green Hulk is in the trailers and the posters and he's hiding after the first scene. Whenever Banner tried to get Hulk to come out I was hoping that Tony would just punch him in the face to make him mad. Look, we haven't seen Hulk absolutely SMASH something since the first Avengers. If we don't get a scene that makes you want to stand up in your seats in the next Avengers movie, I'm gonna be so disappointed. Also, I really don't think teenage Groot is funny at all. I just think that's a really dumb joke. Anyway....I'm done complaining.
So let's talk about some positives. The comedy, for the most part, was the way Thanos likes it "perfectly balanced." I think the Russo's handle comedy a lot better than other MCU directors. There were a few moments, like whenever Tony, Doctor Strange, Wong, And Bruce go from talking about the end of the world to freaking yogurt. So I think they could have eased up a tad, but overall, I think it's a lot better than usual. Also, I think my favorite scene character-wise was Thor's speech to Rocket about having nothing to lose. With a movie with a very fast pace, I loved that that scene made it. And I LOVED the battle on Wakanda. That battle scene between the Wakanda people and those space dogs gave me Braveheart feels. I felt super intimidated and I even jumped in my seat when those dogs growled. And when the Wakandans started charging towards them, I felt that intense feeling you get when you're watching a massive battle about to happen. You start to feel overwhelmed. "This is about to freaking happen."
Alright, there's no way I can talk about everything in this movie so let's get into the ending. That ending dude....... The only downside to that ending is that we know Spider-Man and Black Panther and the Guardians are coming back. Guaranteed. You don't throw the billions of dollars a Black Panther sequel is gonna make down the drain. I do think that anyone who died pre-snap is dead dead except maybe Gamora. I don't think Loki is coming back. But I think they intentionally chose those characters to have disappeared. The ending is not necessarily a question of "Are they going to come back?" But it's "How? And at what price?" And maybe that's part of Thanos' plan. Maybe he took the less experienced Avengers for a reason. Maybe he wants Cap and Tony to sacrifice themselves. Which I think is a guarantee.
Look, their stories have to end somewhere. Tony has been there since the beginning. And there has to be some stakes. And I think they are definitely setting up those deaths for the next movie. Which is why I'm not mad about Cap's screen time. I think Thor is less likely because it seems like they're having fun with this new direction for him. And they can't kill Hulk. In the words of the Joker "You're just too much fun." And I think this movie was meant to focus more on the new and current Avengers and have that fun, so that we can return to the original team to set up their sacrifice. And I think Hawkeye, Black Widow, Cap will all be a major part of that. The other thing is.....Doctor Strange definitely has a plan. He said he saw the only possible reality where they win. He also said that he will not hesitate to let anyone die to stop Thanos. So why on earth does he trade the stone for Tony's life? The only explanation he gives is right before he dies and he says "It was the only way." Strange did that for a reason. And I want to know what that is. But I do think we'll watch major characters die. It gives me chills to think that we'll probably never see Iron Man and Spider-Man reunite. That scene when Peter collapses into Tony's arms and starts crying......just got chills again.
This is easily in the top 3 best comic book movies of all-time. It's some of the most fun you can have in a movie theater. It's got one of the best villains of all time. And the biggest cast list probably ever. It's a load of fun and it's a really good story too. I'd love to discuss this movie with you guys in the comment section. My grade for Avengers: Infinity War is an A+
